My Recent Cruise to Alaska Experience

I am so excited!!!We are boarding the Westerdam ship on a cruise to alaska, through the famous Alaska Inside passage! We board from Pier 30, Seattle, Washington, on a beautiful day .............. a Sunday. The Westerdam cruise ship is one of the Holland America Line's luxury ships that regularly travel the
Alaska Inside Passage Cruise.
Southeastern Alaska is a kingdom of water and ice, a natural masterpiece in progress, a 'solitude of ice and snow and newborn rocks' ---- dim, dreary, mysterious ........ Just 100 years before, the area was completely choked with ice, and now the massive glaciers continue to advance and recede at their leisure, and boats are still the main way around. The history of
Glacier Bay
is fascinating - but a little bit about that later!
As I walk to my cabin, I know that I'm about to start on another extraordinary adventure again. I look forward to experiencing a different culture, eating out-of-the-ordinary foods in quaint places, shopping for exotic goods, and seeing sights and scenes totally unlike those at home. Our first day is a whole day at sea, so Louis and I get to explore every part of the Westerdam. The next day we sail into the magnificent Glacier Bay - everywhere around us was the spectacular Pacific Ocean, with mountains everywhere on the horizon, capped with snow ............ Our
cruise to Alaska excursion
to Seattle was going to be a 7 day adventure!!
The next day we arrive early in
Juneau Alaska,
and spend the whole day exploring this main city of Alaska. Juneau is the largest town in Southeast Alaska and the state capital, but still there are only 30 000 people living here. Most of the worthwhile places are downtown. We visited some small shops, wandered around and bought some small gifts to take home. We also had a delicious cappuccino and soup at a small coffee shop on the main square.Next on our itinerary was the little ancient town of
Sitka Alaska
(the Paris of the Pacific). What I remember from this very old quaint town, is the church in the centre. Every shop in Sitka sells the well known Russian doll, in the most exquisite colours and unusual sizes!! Day 4 of our cruise to Alaska was spent at
Ketchikan Alaska,
where Clint Eastwood owns a beautiful fishing cabin on the lake, We drove past with the tour bus and saw a huge bald eagle not too far from his cabin. All along the way , as we approached Ketchikan, I could see the towering redwoods and massive sequoias, the largest living things on earth, alongside the dense pine forests. It was awesome!! In Ketchikan, we saw the famous Totem Pole Heritage Park. We also spent a few short hours in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia and arrived back in Seattle on Sunday, 27th July. Our Alaska trip was beautiful and unforgettable!!
