The History of Savannah Georgia
As the history of Savannah Georgia goes, it was founded in 1733 by James Edward Oglethorpe, an English General. Georgia was an anti – slavery state under his rule.
In 1732 King George of England sent General Oglethorpe with 114 men and women on a ship called Ann, to Georgia. They were greeted by a 7-feet tall, American-Indian chief, Tomachichi - believed to be the co-founder of Savannah. James Oglethorpe (founder of Georgia) laid out the city, in 24 grids. Part of this layout was 6 perfect squares, of which the largest is Jackson square, a beautiful square with tall Spanish moss trees, ferns, sweet smelling shrubs and a monument. This square hosts the resting place of the great Nathaniel Greene, a revolutionary war-hero, only second to George Washington. The square is beautifully kept with huge trees, wooden benches and little squarrels and birds hopping around. We took a long walk from our hotel the first morning, and found a good coffee shop just off the square and chatted for hours in the shade of some of those tall trees!! It was calm and peaceful, no cars buzzing around on that Sunday morning -- I loved it!!
