Juneau Alaska

juneau alaska, alaska, sacred destinations

I awake ........ at 6h30 ........in front of the beautiful little town of Juneau Alaska. Our ship, the Westerdam, is completely still and when I look out the window, I can see and nearly touch the most beautiful thick, tall pine trees - thousands of them, covered in a gloriously mysterious mist....

Eventually we walk on land, after a sumptuous breakfast at about 10 o' clock. There are only a few shops, mostly built from logs and pine. It rains a lot here, about 2 out of every 3 days and on this day, we walk through a light drizzle. Louis and I stop at the Paradise Deli and Coffee Shop. He enjoys a delicious minestrone soup, while I have a frothy cappuchino.

In the late 19th century, a Tlingit Chief named Kowee, led two prospectors to a creek for some panning. One was Joe Juneau – and they eventually found gold!! That discovery changed not only their lives, but the course of history in Alaska. The town has a beautiful scenic setting. In 1900, the capital of Alaska was moved from Sitka to Juneau. It is only accessible by sea or air. Juneau is criss-crossed with steep, narrow roads going into the rain forested hills behind.

Juneau today, has become one of the busiest cruise ship ports in Alaska, and like today, the result is an atmosphere in which huge floating hotels loom over narrow central streets. There are some excellent museums here, as well as pretty shops. Further out you can also view the magnificent Mendenhall Glacier.

We walked around for about 3 hours and covered most of Juneau's hot spots in the centre of town. I was not looking for shopping in particular – but mostly just wandered the streets, gazing in awe at the beautiful mist, covering the mountains around this pretty little town.

Late afternoon at 17h30 we had to be on board the Westerdam, and left promptly thereafter .

Much later we were sailing the deep blue waters of the Pacific again ..............
