Camp Life in the Kalahari

The camp life here in the kalahari is wonderful!!

We have just left Urikaruus rest camp after a delicious cup of coffee, brewed on the coals of a small fire.

I watched the day break from my tented window. The most beautiful shades of blue and purple were colouring the sky above the deep-orange Kalahari sand dunes. Hundreds of doves and other species of small birds were descending down on the waterhole in front of our cabin, making an incredible noise.

Ahhhh……… what total bliss to have no cell phones, or any other distractions, except the beauty and simplicity of the Kalahari desert!!

camp life, kalahari, sacred, south africa 50 km on, we stop at a picnic spot, Dikbaardskolk. I am sitting in a very comfortable fold up chair, looking at Louis preparing a small fire for coffee and a lunch of toasted cheese, onion and tomato sandwich and a delicious few lamb chops I smell the fire, and above me the big camel thorn tree is gently waving its leaves to shelter us. Little white butterflies are darting around in the trees, with the noises of the desert in the background.

Nossob – my husband’s favourite camp, is situated to the north of the Kgalagadi Park. It is small and quiet and here once can make a little fire, and can put your feet in the sand. And that’s exactly what we do!.. At 5 o’clock we walk to the little shop at Nossob to buy cold beer, bottled water and more wood. This bundle of wood is camel thorn, and makes the best coals. It has a special sweet smell, which I love!

Later on, relaxing in our deep camp chairs with our feet in the sand and a cold beer in hand, we listen to the sounds of faraway jackal ……….

The next night, we sleep at Mata Mata camp. We arrive just before 5 o’clock. This is a small camp with not more than 10 chalets and a few camping spots. We stay in chalet number 1, which is lovely, as it is the most private of them all, and a little bit on the hill. A few ground squirrels disappear under the big shrub before my eyes and a little Namaqua dove arrives on our doorstep. This is our last night in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

Louis lights the fire ………. And pours me a delicious glass of 2001 Brunello di Montalcino – a favourite red wine from Tuscany. The sun is slowly setting and the last streaks of sunlight falls across the tall savanna grass on the dunes. The desert is coming to a rest and I am looking forward to another delicious barbecue, a simple meal …… a glass of good red wine…………. And a table with the best view ……….. of the Kalahari desert ………….
