My Kalahari Resort Experiences and Advice

It’s Saturday noon - 25 degrees Celcius and we are on our way to the small Kalahari resort, Urikaruus. Urikaruus is on the bank of the ancient Auob river between Twee Rivieren and Mata Mata camps.

Urikaruus, kalahari, sacred, south africa We had to fetch our permits at Twee Rivieren, the main camp and stopped to buy ice and cold beer.

Twee Rivieren is one of the traditional rest camps where most facilities like shops, fuel, information centres and rangers can be found. It is also the biggest restcamp. Twee Rivieren is at the most southerly point of the Park - not my favourite camp, as it has become too busy to my liking.

Urikaruus, kalahari, sacred, south africa Mata Mata is very close to the Namibian border. There is a shop and fuel available. I love this camp because it is much smaller and the chalets are situated on a small hill, overlooking the dunes.

Last of the traditional camps is Nossob - my favourite. Nossob is very centrally situated and has recently been revamped. There is a shop and fuel available here. Nossob has a sense of quietness and isolation that none of the other traditional camps have. Nossob is about a 3 hour leisurely drive from Twee Rivieren.

Urikaruus, kalahari, sacred, south africa The Wilderness camps are all unfenced, making you feel at one with the Kalahari desert, an absolute dream come true. Natural materials such as wood, canvas and reeds are used to create a rustic feeling. Here are no facilities like fuel or shops .

The wilderness Kalahari resort camps are as follows:

Bitterpan - which links Nossob and Mata Mata. The area overlooks a huge pan, but very little trees. This camp is small and exclusive, and is surrounded only by the silence of the great Kalahari. It has 4 units.

Urikaruus, kalahari, sacred, south africa Grootkolk is small and exclusive, only 20km from Union’s end. A waterhole is visible from the camp and predators are often seen.

Kalahari Tented Camp (close to Mata Mata) has 15 units. The stilted canvas tents look out on the waterhole in the Auob River.

Kielie Krankie is situated on one of the highest dunes in the Kalahari with infinite views over the sand dunes. There are hardly any trees here, and the camp consists of four units.

Gharagab is accessible to 4 x 4 vehicles only. Close to Unions End, in the north of the Park – it gives visitors the chance to experience this beautiful tree and grass savanna veld of the Kalahari.

Urikaruus, where we are staying, is situated on the bank of the Auob river between Twee Rivieren and Mata Mata. I am sitting on the deck right now, wide open spaces in front of me, wind blowing softly on my face - with the smell of the Kalahari desert over my body ………… words become unnecessary …………..I only want to hear the voices of this ancient land ………. Speaking softly into my soul…….and I realize the Kalahari is an open, honest world which shares its riches with whoever would appreciate it…………..

Little birds are fluttering around, making their way towards the big Camel Thorn (Kameeldoring) tree a few steps away. Everywhere in the distance I see green-gray colours of the Kalahari - Besembos, groot ganna, blue grass, cat’s tail grass, silky bushman grass … covering the dry riverbed of the Auob.

I have found the heart of this land …….. stillness!!!

These are all the beautiful Kalahari resorts to choose from and each one has its own magic ……….
